Every homeowner should have a tool kit that contains the basic tools that you may need to do regular repairs on your home. By having these tools on hand, you can be prepared to handle all repairs in your home, and you can take on some home improvements also.

Hand Tools
Start with the most basic of your tools – hand tools. You need to have a collection of Phillips head screwdrivers as well as straight screwdrivers. You should also have pliers: Regular, needle nose and locking. Then you will want to have wrenches: An Allen wrench, adjustable wrench, combination wrench and a socket wrench set. Also essential is a hammer including a claw and a ball peen hammer and a mallet. In addition to your hand tools you will want basic power drill with a variety of drill bits. You may also want to have a few larger tools handy including a pipe wrench, a pick and a sledgehammer.

Cutting Tools
When you have to cut something, a power saw comes in hand. You should have the right saw for the job, and you will probably build your saw collection slowly. Start with a jigsaw, and then you can add a coping saw, a bow saw, a hacksaw, a crosscut saw and a circular saw. You also want to have a good utility knife and a pair of tin snips to start out.

Safety Gear
No one likes to get hurt, so make sure that you stack the deck in your favor when it comes to safety. You should have earplugs or earmuffs, safety goggles, a dust mask, and a flashlight. It is also a good idea to have a ladder, stepstool and extension cords. At various times you will need ropes, work lights and clamps, and you can pick these things up as you need them. A machinist vice is great to have, but you may need to wait until you have a workshop for that one.

Measuring Tools
When you are measuring things, you need to have a tape measure. You probably want to have a ruler or straight edge, yardstick and a combination square. You also need a level and a chalk line. Then you will probably eventually acquire a pry bar, a metal file, wood chisels, putty knives, a center punch and a countersink nail set.

Nails and Fasteners
Once you have your tools all lined out, you will want to have nails and screws. You will very likely accumulate these as you have leftovers from projects, but you will also want to have nuts, bolts and washers. You should have some sandpaper in a couple of different grades along with some spray lubricant and wood glue.

Specialty Tools
There will be projects that you undertake that need special equipment or tools, and you will gradually accumulate more and more tools and equipment as time goes on. But for now, the tools listed above should get you off to a good start to get most of your regular home maintenance jobs done.

One way to get the appropriate tools you need for work or repairs is with power tools combo kits. Popular manufacturers like Makita, Hitachi, and Bostitch all make such kits that, for an amateur, may serve as an introduction to basic power tools and, for a professional, provide all of the necessary tools for the job. When choosing a kit, however, determine your needs of the job or work before purchasing one. As such combination kits can have two to seven tools with a carrying case, some in a set may be superfluous to the work. Additionally, sets are often grouped by electric and cordless tools and know the needs of the job, as well, before purchasing a set of either type.

In general, combo kits are geared toward professionals and their basic needs on a job. Although construction, automotive, and contracting jobs can vary, certain tools are always staples for each line of work. Manufacturers Makita and Bostitch, in particular, have created combo kits for various professions, including automotive workers, tradesmen, and electricians. The power tools in these kits often have appropriate strengths needed for the most common tasks. Similarly, kits with nailers and staplers, with a compressor and bits, are put together by such manufacturers for those that need these tools on the job.

Not all kits are geared toward professionals, however. Many of the general and contractors kits have basic power tools for the amateur who wants to do projects and repairs around the home. Many of these combination kits include two to four tools, such as reciprocating and circular saws and a two-in-one tool like a hammer drill. Nevertheless, when using such kits, keep in mind your safety. These kits do not come with eye or hearing protection and anyone, including amateurs, should have ear plugs and safety glasses around the home or workspace for using such power tools.

Safety is important for all power tools. As all combination kits come with a carrying case, any safety gear for using them, such as glasses or goggles, ear plugs, and a respirator or face mask, can be placed inside with your tools.

There is a wide range of tools to choose from but here is recommend list of tools for home improvement.

Variable speed reversible drill: This tool comes in either plug-in or cordless. Uses blades that are called bits to drive in or take out screws, drill holes, sand wood, and many other tasks.

Claw Hammer: I recommend getting a 16-ounce hammer that has a fiberglass handle to soften the blow to your hand.

Pliers: Pliers have toothed jaws that enable you to grip various sized objects. For example gripping onto a water pipe, the top of a gas cap or fishing out a tape measure you dropped into the toilet. Most pliers are adjustable allowing for a better grip.

Small Saw: A small easy to use handsaw is handy to have for cutting material such as paneling or shelving.

Various size screwdrivers: You will need to have a verity of sizes in both flat head and Phillips screwdrivers.

Utility Knife: A good strong utility knife with replaceable blades comes in handy for cutting cardboard and making precise cuts.

Staple Gun: A staple gun is good for securing things such as, ceiling tile, plastic sheeting and fabrics.

Level: A good level will contain 3 glass tubes with air bubbles for precise leveling.

Metal file: This tool is good for filing down rough edges, sharpening the edges of scrapers, putty knife and many other objects.

Allen wrench: These wrenches are often sold in sets of various sizes. They are L shaped and designed for bolts that have hexagonal sockets in their heads. This tool is also referred to as a hex key. They are used to assemble almost everything you buy in a box nowadays, grills, furniture, bicycles, toys, etc..

There are many tools to choose from but this is my recommend list that will get anyone new to home improvement on the right track. Focus on quality tools rather than quantity and buy the best quality tool you can afford.
